A Gentle Start To The Sailing Season

Gunfleet Sailing Club held the first two races in its Spring Series over the Easter Bank Holiday, amongst mixed weather.  The sun shone on Sunday 5 April, for the first race, and a light force two, touching three, easterly breeze eased the sailors gently into the start of the 2015 sailing season.  Because of the coast protection works, in the vicinity of the Club, it is necessary for the permanent marks to remain ashore this year and, in their place, a set of inflatable buoys will be laid prior to each race.

Celebrating The Start Of The 2015 Sailing Season

Gunfleet Sailing Club celebrated the start of its 2015 sailing season with the annual Fitting-Out Supper last Saturday evening 28 March.  Club Commodore Richard Walker welcomed 50 members to the event and looked forward to new beaches currently being constructed along the Holland/Clacton frontage.  2015 was to be a challenging year for the Gunfleet with the sailing programme being fitted around the scheme but the members had embraced the works in the clear recognition that the end result would bring huge benefits to the Club.

Cliff Clearance A Real Success

A great way to spend a Saturday

On Saturday 21 February the sun shone and a light offshore breeze greeted over 30 members of the Gunfleet when they took part in the Club’s annual cliff clearance.  Armed with their “loppers and choppers” the team got stuck into cutting back the tamarisk – from Star Point to the far end of West Compound.  Tendring District Council supplied a shredder and operator and soon the whole cliff was buzzing.  Ages ranged from over three score years and ten to just six but everyone mucked in.

Quiz Night A Winner With Everyone

The little grey cells were hard at it down the Gunfleet last Saturday 24 January when the Club held its annual Quiz Night.  The “house full” sign had gone up some weeks earlier, such is the popularity of this event, with members eager to test their knowledge in teams of six.  Ernie. our genial quizmaster, provided some great questions that resulted in many a puzzled expression, and as the first few rounds went by it was very evident there would be several teams competing for victory.

Lifeboat Visit A Great Success

On Sunday 18 January members of the Gunfleet Sailing Club were invited by the Walton and Frinton Yacht Club to have a ramble from W&FYC to the Walton and Frinton Lifeboat at the end of Walton Pier.  We joined our good friends from the Yacht Club at 10:15 and strolled through Walton Town and onto the Pier.  With a gloriously calm day and very light winds we were greeted by the Walton and Frinton Lifeboat, the two Harwich Lifeboats, and the two Clacton Lifeboats – five in all!
