Gunfleet's Laying-Up - Toasting A Great 2023 Sailing Season

Gunfleet Sailing Club celebrated the end of the 2023 sailing season with its Laying-Up Dinner and presentation of trophies in the Clubhouse.  Following an impressive Chinese meal, Commodore Richard Walker reflected on the 2023 sailing season; the ups – strong turnouts for all the 50+ races, the two-day Regatta, the Cadet Splash, and the downs – the long run of bad weather preventing members getting on the water at times.  The Club had been very lucky to receive three new trophies to compete for on an annual basis; the John Venables Trophy, presented by Audrey Venables in memory of her late husband and the Ken Dye Cup, presented by Elaine Dye in memory of her late husband; both gentlemen having been very keen sailing enthusiasts.  The third trophy, as a celebration of the Coronation of King Charles III, was provided by the Club itself, to be sailed for each year on the Sunday nearest 6th May.  With so much happening it was of little surprise that the Gunfleet had the reputation of being “probably the best little sailing club on the east coast”.

The following trophies for this year’s sailing were then presented by special guest Bob Moss, who had been a member of Gunfleet Sailing Club back in the 1960’s:
